Journey, change…forward

Do you know if you’re on a path? Have you felt stuck, in search of a new goal, or have you realized that there’s something else you can do or learn in this world? I’m not sure how much stock I ever put in all of this stuff. For years, it wasn’t for me. I didn’t need a path, journey or any of those what I once thought were ‘life coach moments’, I was living, enjoying, being – that was enough. I can’t tell you if there was a specific ‘aha’ moment or that I read this thing on @Pinterest or saw it on @Oprah® that seemed to click, but somehow, this mindset has entered my existence and it seems it’s here to stay.

“No matter how hard the past…you can always begin again” – Buddha

While teaching, I found myself often on a schedule. Between the first day of school and New Year’s Eve there were holidays, homecoming and winter travel plans. From the New Year forward there were exams, events, spring travel plans and the arrival of camp planning for summer. Although the travel journeys and homecoming themes changed, the outward journey remained the same. Kids changed from year to year, planning changed, birthdays came and went and each summer brought new whistles, new campers and new newsletter rhymes – otherwise, not much was new.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world” – Gandhi

Today, things are different. Each day is different. Each yoga class sets a new intention. Each article is for some other blog or magazine and each event is with a different organization. Today, the outward and inward journeys exist and are fluid. There is limited traditional and a maximum need for flexibility. The inward journey could have existed while teaching, and perhaps it began all those years ago with that first big travel journey, in that first beach yoga class or the first time I flew in a hammock, I don’t know. There’ve been new people, new adventures, a new mindset, a new coast and many more ‘new’ that have added to this journey, path, or whatever it is I find myself on these days.

“And you know what you know. And you are the one who’ll decide where to go” – Dr. Seuss

Today, social media feeds are flooded with new anti-aging methods, new fitness accountability programs, and even the newest leggings to wear. With each click you find people on that journey to find something new, to try a new path, to create a new chapter to their already flourishing story. Maybe you’ve tried a climbing gym or test drove a new recipe. Maybe you’re figuring out how to grow your family or setting off on a spiritual adventure all your own. Or perhaps you’re stuck, knowing you want to do something, change something or have always had this dream but are not sure how to make it a reality. At one time or another we’ve all been there. Whether you head out on a hike, find a yoga flow, hit the gym, join a program, read a book, find that meditative calm, chat with a friend, seek professional help or find your own way, there’s a way to get unstuck. It’s often hard to start the journey and those first few miles trudging uphill often take a lot out of you. But get in the zone, hit your strides, start to see some of that well-earned growth and the sky’s the limit. Your goal may change a million times along the way, but no matter what happens, you didn’t sit this one out. You saw something you want to change and are willing to put in the work to do just that.

“She took the leap and built her wings on the way down” – unknown

Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. You are on your own path and whether you follow the advice of Gandhi, Dr. Seuss, or are more partial (like my friend Cara) to the words of Jon Bon Jovi, remember you’re in charge of your life. If you’re lucky enough, you get to choose the direction of the journey. You create the chapters and you write the words to your own story. The best books have plot twists you never knew were possible. Don’t be afraid to create yours. Life is not meant to be stagnant. Find your journey…onward.

“Welcome To Wherever You Are” (Bon Jovi)

Maybe we’re different, but we’re still the same
We all got the blood of Eden, running through our veins
I know sometimes it’s hard for you to see
You come between just who you are and who you wanna be

If you feel alone, and lost and need a friend
Remember every new beginning, is some beginning’s end

Welcome to wherever you are
This is your life, you made it this far
Welcome, you gotta believe
That right here right now, you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be
Welcome, to wherever you are

When everybody’s in, and you’re left out
And you feel your drowning, in a shadow of a doubt
Everyones a miracle in their own way
Just listen to yourself, not what other people say

When it seems you’re lost, alone and feeling down
Remember everybody’s different
Just take a look around

Be who you want to, be who you are
Everyones a hero, everyones a star

When you wanna give up, and your hearts about to break
Remember that you’re perfect, G-d makes no mistakes
